WaterTectonics supported water quality improvements at two wastewater treatment facilities on the island of Moloka’i. The lagoon systems required improved circulation and oxygen transfer to support more consistent treatment performance and improved control of suspended solids and biological contaminants. Wastewater lagoons can experience uneven mixing and hydraulic short circuiting, which limits effective treatment time and contributes to elevated turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), and biological activity within the system.
To address these challenges, SolarBee® aerator circulators were installed to enhance lagoon mixing and reinforce healthy ecological conditions within the treatment basins. A single SolarBee unit was installed in each of the three lagoons at both facilities, for a total of six SolarBee aerator circulators across the two sites. SolarBee systems gently circulate large volumes of water, improving oxygen transfer and reducing stagnation while helping maintain balanced biological conditions throughout the lagoon. By improving mixing and circulation, the systems support more consistent treatment of TSS, turbidity, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).
Notably, SolarBee aerator circulators can induce circulation across significant distances within a lagoon. Through indirect flow created by the pump system, a single unit can pull water from up to one quarter mile away, allowing effective circulation of large lagoon basins. The systems are also designed to operate entirely on solar power with battery storage, providing reliable mixing and aeration without the need for grid electricity.
