The Lower Duwamish Waterway cleanup site is approximately five miles long and flows into Elliott Bay. This part of the waterway was designated as a contaminated site under both state and federal law. As part of the EPA’s Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund cleanup, several areas of contaminated sediment were found along the east bank of the shoreline. These contaminants put fish and shellfish at risk as well as Tribal fishers who consume them. WaterTectonics was selected to provide a 250gpm treatment system, comprised of Chitosan Enhanced Sand Filtration (CESF) and carbon filtration, to treat dredge return water. The barge mounted system successfully treated and discharged 2.5 million gallons of clean water back into the Duwamish River over the course of the eight week project.
