How We Work   |   Treatability

Developing Science-Based Answers to Complex Problems

Validate First

A treatability study involves collecting samples of water from your project, shipping it to our lab, and bench testing different treatment processes to determine their efficacy. Many of our clients are dealing with changing permits and new contaminants that require them to implement additional treatment to achieve their water quality goals. We work collaboratively with our clients and their partners to determine what research is needed, what processes we should bench test, and what key performance indicators (KPIs) to focus on.

Why Conduct a Treatability Study?

Treatability studies provide a way to de-risk your investment in a water treatment project before installing a system at full-scale. We can test actual water samples from your project or synthetic samples made up by our lab to determine which treatment approaches will work best, what about your water may be challenging, and which processes won’t work at all. Depending on the scope of work, consumable costs, waste volumes, power consumption, and other valuable data points can be quantified to determine full-scale operating costs.

Example Treatability Projects:

  • Influent Characterization: Quantitative & Qualitative Assessment of Raw Water Samples
  • Methods: Description of Processes Tested & Techniques Applied
  • Results: Discussion of Reactions Observed During Treatment, including Data and Pictures
  • Conclusions: Summary of Findings & Recommended Next Steps

Our Lab Capabilities

Our lab includes multiple, full-time scientific staff that conduct treatability studies on a daily basis. We have equipment in-house to test most of the technologies shown on our website, including pre-treatment (chemical, electrochemical), advanced oxidation, clarification (tank, column, assisted, DAF, etc.), filtration (paper, media, membrane), adsorption (GAC, zeolite, etc.), ion exchange, reverse osmosis, UV, and more. We have extensive cold storage and bench-top analysis equipment for real-time process assessment. We work with certified third-party labs for out-of-house analysis and follow industry best practices for sample manifests and waste disposal.
